Murders on Halloween

1)1974-Candies poisoned with cyanide:

Poisoned candy was the terror of a Halloween night in Texas in 1974. An 8-year-old boy named Timothy O'Brian would die after being poisoned after receiving a powdered candy (very popular in the time) without knowing that it contained cyanide.

Who had been the murderer? His own father. The man was burdened with debt and tried to collect on various life insurance policies he had taken out for the child. To try to cover up the crime, he also gave poisoned candies to his other daughter Elizabeth and several children in the neighborhood. Luckily they didn't eat it. Ronald O'Brian was sentenced to death and executed ten years later for such a terrible crime.

2)1979-Toolbox killers:

Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris were the torture team known as the "Toolbox Killers". They got that name because they used basic household tools to inflict terror on their victims who were young teenagers in Los Angeles.

The men gave the girls rides and took them to remote places to rape, torment and murder them. Bittaker and Norris dumped the bodies into the mountains. The men kept photographs and audio tapes of the girls being raped and murdered.

The men's fifth and final victim died on Halloween night 1979. Shirley Ledford who was beaten with a hammer, raped and tortured with pliers while being recorded. Her body was then dumped on the lawn of a suburban home, where a jogger found it the next morning.

Norris confessed to the kidnappings and rapes, but blamed Bittaker for the murders.

Norris signed a plea deal in which he testified against his partner in crime in exchange for life in prison. Bittaker was sentenced to death but is still alive today.

3)2010-Liske family murders

On Halloween night 2010, Devon Griffin returned to his family's home after attending church. He then stumbled upon the bodies of her brother, Derek Griffin, her mother, Susan Liske, and her stepfather, William Liske. Devon called an aunt, who then dialed 911.

Who was the killer? Well, he was the 24-year-old son of Devon's stepfather. William Liske Jr. who had a history of mental illness and suffered from schizophrenia. William Liske Jr. had a history of assault, robbery and was accused of beating his stepmother, but the charges were dropped.

William Liske Jr. pleaded guilty to the murders of his relatives and received three life sentences without the possibility of parole. In 2015, he was found dead in his prison cell from a self-inflicted wound.
